Competencies

• Formative mini-Clinical Evaluation Exercises throughout, covering history taking, clinical examination and health promotion, done in your usual workplace rather than away from it
• Multi-source feedback, also called 360 degree feedback, against the Professional Qualities Curriculum and aimed at communication, management and cultural competency

To complete

• The Written Examination, multiple choice and blueprinted to the curriculum
• The Clinical Examination, which is two long cases and four short cases
• Progression to Advanced Training depends on the Basic Training requirements being complete as well as both examinations

Competencies

• Seven domains: assessment and diagnosis and early management of acute presentations, ongoing management of acute illness and of complex patients with multiple comorbidities, longitudinal management of chronic disease, consultation and liaison medicine, the determinants of health, evidence based medicine, and leadership and team management
• Care for patients at all stages of life from adolescence onwards, for acute undifferentiated illness as well as defined syndromes, and for common chronic disease including end-of-life care
• Managing patients in spite of clinical uncertainty, and using interventions, investigations and medication in a way that is rational and cost-effective
• The practice this trains for: general physicians provide the backbone of rural physician practice and hold key positions in larger regional centres, outer metropolitan hospitals and tertiary centres
• In many hospitals the role now runs alongside emergency physicians as an acute care physician, fast-tracking and coordinating care from the outset
