Basic Training

• Sit the Divisional Written examination early. Both Divisional examinations have to be passed before Advanced Training can start, and an early pass leaves room for a re-sit.
• Take the geriatrics and rehabilitation rotations. Orthogeriatrics, memory clinics and stroke rehabilitation land inside four of the six curriculum domains, and the consultants there are the ones who write your references.
• Start a research or audit project. No project is published as a requirement of this program, and a supervisor who has seen you run one is worth more than the project.

Before Advanced Training starts

• Map both programs early if you want a second specialty. The credit is approved in advance and not retrospectively, so a year taken first and asked about later can count for nothing.

During training

• Plan more than one training setting from the start. Moving is the recommendation, and staying put has to be argued as increasing the breadth and depth of your training rather than duplicating a rotation already certified.

At least 3 months before a rotation

• Apply for prospective approval whenever a rotation sits outside a setting's accreditation. Late is the disruption, and approval is never automatic.
