Paediatric Surgery

Medical school

• Twelve months or more at a rural clinical school in a Modified Monash 2 to 7 or Geographic Classification for Health U2 to R3 area scores one of the three rurality points.

Prevocational years

• Attachments shorter than ten weeks score nothing at all, and private assisting scores nothing. Time in private hospitals counts to six months across the whole curriculum vitae.

Unaccredited registrar years

• Unaccredited registrar terms in paediatric surgery and in general surgery each score six points per six-month rotation, to a maximum of twelve points each.

Before applying

• Six continuous months or more in a surgical position at a regional, rural or remote hospital scores a further rurality point.
• Seven skills courses each score one point to a maximum of three. None is required to apply, and none has to have been completed in the last six years.
• Only the two highest scoring qualifications count. A doctorate scores nine of the twelve qualification points and a master's degree six. The Doctor of Medicine is not scored as a master's.

Five years before applying

• Only the two highest scoring publications or presentations count, and only from the five years before applications close. A first or second authored article scores four points and a scientific meeting presentation two.

Two years before applying

• Referees are sampled by the committee from every surgical consultant who has seen the applicant operate in the two years before 1 February, so the whole list matters rather than three chosen names. Only Fellows of RACS and vocationally registered surgeons in the Australian and New Zealand public system may be listed.
