Competencies

• Six curriculum domains, and diabetes mellitus is one of them on its own: diagnosis and management, the emergencies, acute illness and surgery, conception and pregnancy, age-related conditions, and the complications
• Endocrine systems and disorders is the largest domain, running pituitary and hypothalamus, growth and development, thyroid, adrenal, reproductive endocrinology, parathyroid and calcium and bone, appetite and weight, and neuroendocrine tumours
• A domain of approaches to 12 named presenting problems rather than to diagnoses, among them polydipsia and polyuria, weight gain, weight loss, anterior neck lumps, hirsutism, hypertension, fatigue and galactorrhoea
• Analytical methods as a domain in its own right: hormone assays and dynamic endocrine testing, radiology and ultrasound, nuclear medicine imaging, bone densitometry and quantitative bone assessment, and research methods
• Procedural skills are hormone implants and fine needle aspiration as they relate to endocrine diagnosis, with the histopathology of endocrine tumours including fine needle biopsy of the thyroid gland
• Experience in clinical or laboratory research and in diagnostic endocrine laboratory medicine is a strongly recommended part of training rather than a required one
• By the end: able to give comprehensive medical care in endocrinology unsupervised, at consultant level

To complete

• Core training at settings accredited for it, with your individual training program approved prospectively under the Progression through Training Policy
• Supervisors nominated from the list of those who meet the supervision requirements of the program, which the online registration form and MyRACP both carry
• Certification of each period by the Training Program Committee for endocrinology, which reviews progress against the training requirements at the end of each rotation or calendar year
• Re-registration every year, by 28 February for the first half or the whole of the year, and by 31 August for the second half
• Admission to Fellowship follows a recommendation from the Training Program Committee, so completing the time is not the same as completing the program
