Training duration
3 years BPT + 3 years Advanced Training in Endocrinology (36 months FTE, minimum 24 months in Australia/New Zealand) = approximately 6 years total
Applications
BPT: state/hospital network selection, typically September–November for February start. Advanced Training: register with RACP by 28 February or 31 August (annual re-registration). Endocrinology AT positions applied for directly at accredited departments.
Selection format
BPT selection is hospital-based. Endocrinology AT positions are secured at the department level — primarily outpatient/clinic-based specialty. Diabetes, thyroid, and pituitary disease exposure during BPT is valued.
When to apply
FRACP Written and Clinical Examinations must be completed. Endocrinology exposure (outpatient clinics, diabetes management) during BPT is valued for AT applications.
Competition
Endocrinology is competitive, particularly at major academic centres. More positions available than cardiology or neurology. The specialty has a strong outpatient and consultative medicine component.

Queensland Endocrinology Advanced Training Program
A centralised state-wide recruitment process for advanced training positions in endocrinology, run by a panel of Endocrinology Unit Directors from accredited Queensland hospitals.
- A seven-year joint endocrinology and chemical pathology program is available, leading to both FRACP and Fellowship of the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia (FRCPA)
- Up to 12 months of non-core training may be taken in another discipline such as genetics, nephrology, transplant or autoimmune pathology, nuclear medicine, obstetric medicine or general medicine
- Flexibility — minimum 0.2 full-time equivalent; eight years to complete, extending to 10 years for joint or non-core training
- Eligibility — completed RACP Basic Training including the Written and Clinical Examinations, and appointment to an advanced training position
- Flexibility — minimum 0.2 full-time equivalent; the training program must be completed within eight years
- Interrupted training — allowed, but interruptions of more than 12 continuous months may require a Return to Training Plan agreed with a supervisor and approved by the relevant training committee
