Medical school

• One cumulative academic year at a rural clinical school scores 2 rurality points and two or more years score 4, of the 10 available.

Prevocational years

• Ten rotations count as surgery in general, including acute surgical unit, breast and endocrine, colorectal, surgical oncology, transplant, trauma, upper gastrointestinal and hepatobiliary, vascular and paediatric surgery. Surgical nights and relief terms count for none of it.
• Rural pre-SET rotations are scored in bands: 26 to 62 weeks is 1 point, 62 to 114 weeks is 2, and beyond 114 weeks is 4.

Two clinical years before applying

• Every consultant surgeon worked with in those two years must be listed, a minimum of four, and omitting one can withdraw the application. A clinical year runs February to February.
• A consultant only counts after 10 weeks of direct supervision at least once every four weeks, and at least one allied health professional must be listed from every term, a minimum of three.
• One primary referee always comes from the most recent surgical term, and training supervisors, trainers and heads of department are chosen first.

Three years before applying

• Professional development activities score only if completed in the three years before the close. Activities preparing for the Generic Surgical Sciences Examination earn nothing, and neither do grand rounds, mortality meetings or unit audits.

Before applying

• A full-time research year lets referee contacts be drawn from outside the usual two-year window.
