Two routes: the ACRRM Fellowship is 4 years full-time (3 years of Core Generalist Training plus at least 12 months of Advanced Specialised Training); the RACGP Rural Generalist Fellowship takes about 4 years (FRACGP plus rural skills and emergency components). Jurisdictional pathways add a prevocational runway from internship.
Applications
Route-dependent. ACRRM runs FOUR rolling intake cycles a year (a mid-2026 snapshot showed one cycle closing 3 August 2026 and the next 26 October 2026). The RACGP Rural Generalist route is entered through the annual AGPT round (2027 program: 3 March to 14 April 2026, which filled in the main intake). Jurisdictional rural generalist pathways — Queensland, for example — recruit final-year students and interns directly. Check acrrm.org.au and racgp.org.au for current cycles.
Selection format
The two colleges use genuinely different gates (verified from each college directly). ACRRM — for BOTH Commonwealth-funded AGPT and self-funded Independent Pathway applicants: a written suitability assessment (five essays of 250 or more words, 40% of the combined score) then a six-station multiple mini-interview (2 minutes reading and 8 responding per station, 60%), with non-scored reference checks informing final decisions. RACGP (including the Rural Generalist route): the Casper situational-judgement test only, which RACGP states applies exclusively to RACGP applicants. Commercial prep sites claiming Casper covers both colleges are wrong.
When to apply
Varies by route: jurisdictional rural generalist pathways (Queensland, for example) recruit final-year medical students and PGY1-2 doctors directly, while ACRRM and AGPT entry expects general registration by training commencement — typically after internship. There is no single universal PGY floor.
Competition
A workforce-priority pathway with expanding funded places — up to 1,694 RACGP and 374 ACRRM rural generalist places for 2027, and Commonwealth GP and rural generalist places set to exceed 2,000 a year from 2028 — yet demand is real: the entire 2027 RACGP round filled without a second intake. Selection is merit-based, not open enrolment; neither college publishes an applicant-to-place ratio.

- Fees — the ACRRM funded-pathway fee schedule applies: $190 application, $500 selection, and $470 membership

Recent updates
From 2026 the 100 ACRRM Rural Generalist Training Scheme places are consolidated into the mainstream AGPT program, and a $30,000 salary incentive applies for trainees transitioning into community general practice from semester 1, 2026.
From 2025, applicants can no longer hold Commonwealth funding for a dual Fellowship across both ACRRM and RACGP simultaneously (ACRRM 2027 Eligibility and Application Guide).
Australian Health Ministers approved Rural Generalist Medicine as a new field of specialty practice within general practice (21-22 September 2025); AMC accreditation of the FACRRM and FRACGP-RG programs is still required before specialist registration in the field itself becomes available.
