Training duration
6 years total — 276 weeks: 4 years Basic Training + 2 years Advanced Training. Trainees are allocated to an Integrated Training Program (ITP) covering both a tertiary and a rural facility.
Applications
Annual selection in Australia and New Zealand. Selection occurs each year — check ranzcog.edu.au/training/franzcog/ for current application opening dates and deadlines. The 2026 selection process included significant changes to assessment (see Updates).
Selection format
2026 selection weighting: CV/Application 35%, Mini Multi-Source Feedback (Mini-MSF) 20%, Selection Interview 45% (referee reports and institutional ranking no longer used). Interviews are 15-minute videoconference panels of 5–8 members. Per the published FRANZCOG Selection Process Changes 2026–2028 schedule (February 2026 edition): the 2027 selection year (2028 intake) replaces the standardised interview with multi mini-interviews (MMIs), and the 2028 selection year (2029 intake) replaces the scored CV with a situational judgement test (SJT).
When to apply
Typically PGY2–5; no PGY floor applies for the 2026 selection round (the PGY2 certificate requirement was withdrawn), but from the 2027 selection year (2028 intake) entrants will need PGY3+ with 12 months of O&G clinical experience, per the published 2026–2028 changes schedule. O&G rotations and procedural exposure are expected before application.
Competition
Competitive, particularly for metropolitan Integrated Training Programs — roughly 90–100 positions per year in Australia and 20–30 in Aotearoa New Zealand. Applications are capped at 3 attempts (applying in both AU and NZ counts as 2; scoring within 10% of the lowest offer on your third attempt earns one extra attempt).

Selection points and pathways for Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander, and Māori applicants
- First Nations — Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander, Māori, and Pacific applicants receive recognised CV points and, if successful, priority allocation of their first-preference training location

- Structured CV/Application — 35% of the selection score (rurality and First Nations identification carry recognised CV points)
- Mini Multi-Source Feedback — 20% of the selection score, rated by 6–8 raters including an optional First Nations/Māori health representative; cultural safety is an assessed domain
- Selection Interview — 45% of the selection score (15-minute videoconference panel)

Recent updates
MMI/SJT years RESOLVED (14 July) from the published "FRANZCOG Selection Process Changes 2026-2028" schedule (February 2026 edition): 2027 selection year (2028 intake) = CV + MSF + MMI, with eligibility PGY3+ and 12 months O&G experience; 2028 selection year (2029 intake) = SJT + MSF + MMI, with the scored CV removed and Prevocational Pathway completion added to eligibility. The 2026 selection year (2027 intake) keeps CV + MSF + standardised interview. Note: the College's May 2026 FAQ confirms no CV-scoring changes before the 2028 intake. Separately, all five subspecialty "Selection — Information for Applicants" documents have been withdrawn from ranzcog.edu.au ("2027 information TBC" on every programme page).
Re-verified against the official 2026 FRANZCOG Trainee Selection Process (v10): weighting is CV 35% / Mini-MSF 20% / Interview 45%; 3-attempt cap with a 10%-buffer bonus attempt; two-phase preferencing; ~90–100 AU + 20–30 NZ positions. First Nations provisions confirmed: recognised CV points for Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander, Māori and Pacific applicants plus priority first-preference location allocation. Rural ITPs confirmed (Bendigo, Dubbo/Orange, Western VIC, Darwin) with a defined eligibility gateway. DRANZCOG has been renamed the Associate Training Program (Procedural). The MMI/SJT introduction year within the 2026–2028 changes is not yet fixed — previously published here as 2027; treat the year as unconfirmed. A College training offer does not include employment — applicants must separately secure hospital employment or the offer is void.
