When Intensive Care Medicine applications run, and what the round looks like.
Applications
Intake 1 applications open 16 March and close 30 March.
Most applicants are PGY3 to PGY5. Foundation Time is the hard eligibility bar: 6 months of supervised intensive care experience in a CICM-accredited unit within the past 3 years, plus full registration with AHPRA, MCNZ, MCHK, or MCS.
Training positions and workforce figures below are limited to New South Wales. Selection criteria, requirements and application dates are set by CICM nationally and apply in every state.

Advanced airway skills, communication, advanced life support or advanced paediatric life support, donor awareness, introduction to intensive care medicine, introduction to echocardiography and ultrasound, brain death and organ donation, burns and inhalational injury, evidence based medicine, focused cardiac ultrasound, neuro intensive care, safe patient transport, and spinal cord injury.

About 2.7 years shorter than the two programs one after the other
Available from 3 August 2026 as a recognition of prior learning process rather than a third program. It replaces one of the two primary examinations with a gap assessment, and the final year can be combined. Each college still selects its own trainees, there is no combined application, and acceptance by one does not help with the other.

The CICM and ANZCA Dual Training Recognition Process becomes available on 3 August 2026, with recognition of prior learning applications opening the same day. It was renamed from "Dual Training Pathway" because it is a recognition process rather than a new program leading to dual Fellowship.
