RACP
When Infectious Diseases applications run, and what the round looks like.

RACP registration by the twice-yearly deadlines (28 February and 31 August) is administrative.
Entry is after Basic Physician Training — there is no single national scored round.
Advanced Training positions are secured at hospital or network level.
No equivalent centralised match was found in the other states.
Entry is typically PGY4 to PGY6 or later: after the 3-year Basic Physician Training program, having passed both FRACP Divisional Examinations, holding general (unconditional) AHPRA registration, and having secured an accredited Advanced Training position.
Training positions and workforce figures below are limited to Victoria. Selection criteria, requirements and application dates are set by RACP nationally and apply in every state.

Basic Pathological Sciences examination
A pass or an exemption is required of every trainee. It is not a prerequisite for Part I, and it has to be in hand before sitting Part II.
Before training starts, or early in it
Microbiology Part I
That floor is for a joint trainee. A single-discipline pathology trainee waits 24 months. Two phases, taken during a year of laboratory training, and no component carries an automatic exemption for anyone.
After at least 18 months in an accredited microbiology laboratory
Microbiology Part II
The Part I Phase II oral has to be passed first. Assessed by a formal structured oral examination and a major project, and attemptable only during a year of laboratory training.
No earlier than the third year of laboratory training
5 years, published as 2 plus 3
One program run by both colleges, 5 years rather than 3, published as 2 years of infectious diseases training and 3 years of laboratory training in microbiology, and leading to Fellowship of both. Joint trainees sit the same microbiology examinations as pathology trainees, judged to the same standards.

Starting from 2026
Learn how your target state selects. Victoria runs one centralised, dated match while other states appoint at hospital level, so timing and process differ.
Where a panel interview is used, as in Victoria, being known to the department helps. The heads of department interview together and have to reach consensus.
Queensland Health is the only state department publishing these figures so far.
No published figures exist yet for Victoria. This is being worked on. The selection criteria and requirements above apply Australia wide regardless of state. See the Queensland figures.

RACP applied a 4% fee increase for the 2026 training year. The Advanced Training annual fee is AUD $4,230.
A new (Wave 3) competency-based Advanced Training curriculum for infectious diseases takes effect for first-year advanced trainees starting from 2026. Trainees who started in 2025 or earlier continue on the previous curriculum.
