Competencies

• Twenty themes with no domains above them, opening with laboratory management and technical procedures and closing with palliative care
• The disorders run anaemia, haemoglobinopathies, bone marrow syndromes and white cell disorders, acute leukaemia, lymphoproliferative and plasma cell and myeloproliferative disorders, and stem cell transplantation
• Then haemostasis: inherited and acquired bleeding disorders, thrombotic disorders and platelet disorders
• Then the practice around them: clinical blood transfusion, apheresis and venesection, iron overload, paediatrics, obstetrics and gynaecology, radiation principles and use, and palliative care
• Laboratory work is the first theme rather than an adjunct, on the clinical program as well as the joint one

To complete

• Registration with both colleges on the joint program, with the clinical training and the laboratory training each done in settings that college has accredited
• Five full-time equivalent years of certified training before admission to Fellowship of the pathologists, of which one year is credited back for Basic Physician Training already completed
• Re-registration every year, by 28 February for the first half or the whole of the year, and by 31 August for the second half
• Part-time training averaging at least 16 hours a week on the joint program, against 8 for pathology training alone
