When Dermatology applications run, and what the round looks like.
Applications
Key dates and the submission process are published in the News section of the college website, in January or February.
Applications close on a date published for each cycle, and an application outside that period is not accepted.
Eligible from PGY2 onward, on accredited PGY1 and PGY2 terms with broad exposure, preferably including general medicine and general surgery. Applications are accepted while completing PGY2. Most successful applicants are PGY3 to PGY7.

PGY1 and PGY2
Before applying
A first-author publication in a dermatology journal is near-mandatory. Multiple publications separate successful applicants.
Research electives with a dermatology department, including internationally, can open doors.
Dermoscopy training is valued. Some candidates complete formal dermoscopy courses before application.
No cap on the number of times you can apply. The 4-attempts rule was removed in September 2019.

Entry numbers are published by faculty and move sharply — the national total rose from 17 full-time places in 2021 to 39 full-time and 1 part-time in 2023, then fell to 18 full-time and 2 part-time for 2026. Western Australia has taken no entrants in 2025 or 2026. The college states plainly that being shortlisted in one year does not guarantee shortlisting in the next, because every application is scrutinised afresh against that year's field.
Entry places are full-time equivalent (FTE) by default, as published by the college as a guide. A part-time (PTE) figure is shown only where the college also published one.

The selection process is national, then local. Applicants register with the Australasian College of Dermatologists, those interviewed for each State Faculty location are ranked through a national process, the ranked list is matched against stated preferences, and State Faculty representatives then consider applicants for their location
